Beware of sporty "gurus"

Today, we will provide another hint in selecting the spiritual master in Prabhupada’s line of disciplic succession.

When you select spiritual master, makes sure he follows all the basic rules that Prabhupada requested from his disciples.

The direct reason for this article is this video published on facebook:

So, what is the problem here? Problem is Prabhupada didn’t allow tennis or any other sport for his initiatied disciples, since it is waste of time.

Here is a one of his earliest handwritten notes to all his disciples which things are allowed in Krishna consciousness.

As you can see, it says one should not engage in frivolous sports.

This vainava principle is also confirmed in a letter to Sacisuta:

So, there are two possibilities here:

  • Indradyumna Swami is not aware of basic requirements for Prabhupada disciples. In this case, question arises how once can be guru if he is ignorant about basic standards for initiated disciples.
  • Or secondly, which is even worse, he knows about Prabhupada’s instruction, but he doesn’t care to follow it.

In any case, if you guru is playing tennis, then it becomes impossible for disciples to preach against frivolous sports, because people will tell them “But, your guru playing tennis, how can you preach against this?”

So, you have been warned, if you select sporty guru, you could end up passing tennis balls as your “devotional service”, similarly to people in this video.

If disciples are engaged in frivolous sports, that means that are partially in Maya, but if “guru” is engaged in frivolous sports, that is a big problem.

Staying fit

Prabhupada went for a long morning walks where he would discuss philosophy with his disciples. Devotees can also be engaged in kirtan, so there is no need for frivolous sports.

Clear question

You can ask yourself: Would Srila Prabhupada ever play basketball? Would Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati ever play golf? Would Indradyumna Swami play tennis if Prabhupada would be present on the planet?

Stay safe, select gurus who are above useless activities.
